
The district, North 24-parganas, has been divided geographically into three parts, e.g. (a) vast riverine belt in the Southern part of Basirhat Sub-Division. (Sundarban area), (b) the industrial and urbanized zone of Bidhannagar and Barrackpore Sub-division (c) vast cultivable plain land in the Bongaon Sub-division and adjoining part of Barrackpore, Barasat & Northern part of Basirhat Sub-Divisions. This vast district comprises of 5 nos. of Sub-divisions, 22 nos. of Development Blocks, 26 numbers of Municipalities and 1 Municipal Corporation. Main rivers of this district are Hooghly, Ichamati, Bidyadhari, Raimongal etc. North 24 Parganas is one of the highest populated district in India as well as density of district is also very high. The district in its coastal belt is prone to cyclones, floods and natural disasters.
Precautionary measures taken within the existing infrastructure, in the form of preparedness, is taken to mitigate the human sufferings, loss of life and property and restore normalcy at the earliest.
The District has an international border with Bangladesh at Petrapole, Bongaon. North 24 Parganas has a variety of places of touristic interest like Dakshineswar, Adyapith Temple, Taki, Gandhi Ghat, Rabindra Tirtha, Aquatica etc.. The vast expanse of the district and its dynamic socio-economic fervour makes it a unique administrative challenge for good governance.
